Every year, I look forward to making this during Christmas time. I got the recipe off the Reynolds slow cooker bags and was completely surprised at HOW delicious this was. You can make this anytime really, but I love to make it when it is snowy white and cold outside. The warm apples and sauce mixed with the cold ice cream make it the perfect temperature. The sauce combines with the simple vanilla flavor of the ice cream for the perfect sweetness. It is even good warmed up the next day, just a little grainier. Plus, this is incredibly easy...just throw it in the crock-pot for a few hours and its done.
Glazed Cinnamon Apples with Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert
6 large granny smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into eight wedges
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 tbsp flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
6 tbsp butter, melted
Vanilla ice cream
crumbed oatmeal or ginger snap cookies (optional)
Place apples in the crock-pot and drizzle with lemon juice. Mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in a medium bowl. Sprinkle mixture over apples; stir gently to coat apples. Drizzle with butter. Place lid on slow cooker. Cook on low for 3 hours or on high for 2 until apples are done. Serve warmed apples over ice cream and with ginger snap cookies if desired.
Note: Don't cook your apples too long or they will be soft and mushy. We also didn't use ginger snap cookies or oatmeal, but I bet the ginger snaps would be good.
NOTE: I peeled the apples with a carrot peeler, then used an apple slicer which cut the 8 wedges and cored it for me. Easy.
